Beauty - Fashion Do's and Don't For Men

We women can be selfish at times and forget that guys deserve attention too. So this topic is for all the fellows that have felt left out for so long.

One of the key things that we tend to forget sometimes is that being trendy does not always mean we look good. I do not believe in following trends .... male or female. I think that people should dress in a style that exentuates who they are and highlights their personality. Here are a few common fashion mistakes that men make and tips to follow to ensure that they always look tip-top Wink

These tips are for the everyday guy. They're meant to help you gain confidence when you walk into a meeting or the next cocktail party, and they'll help make your wife or girlfriend feel proud. You're a grown man—it's time your wardrobe grew up too.

But, remember, it's not about being trendy, it's about looking good.

1. Match your belt and shoes. If you're wearing black shoes, put on a black belt. And brown shoes demand a brown belt. A good, general rule is to never mix the color of your leathers.

2. For crying out loud, pull your pants down. You may at times feel 40, but you don't need to hike up your pants like you're already 40. And it's even worse if you tuck in your shirt like Napoleon Dynamite.

3. On the flip side, pull up your pants. Seeing some 19-year-old's boxer shorts is bad enough; we don't need to see your tighty whities. You should have stopped buying "baggy cut" jeans years ago.

4. Pay attention to your shoes. You could be wearing $100 jeans with a sharp-looking shirt, but you'll still embarrass your wife or girlfriend with those old loafers that should have been pitched in the 1990s. Buy quality shoes that look smart and stylish. Remember, people check out shoes. Potential employers often will look at them to judge a candidate's attention to detail. Good rule of thumb: Spend your money on shoes, not shirts and pants. Also, match your socks to your shoes (very easy) or at least make sure they are a nice "bridge" from the shoes to the pants. Save the white tube socks for the gym and lounging on weekends.

5. Wear clothes that fit properly. At this age, trying to look trendy is a cry for help. And just because that fitted (another term for "your nipples are showing") medium T-shirt looks good on Jake Gyllenhaal, that doesn't mean it looks good on you.

6. A side note to No. 5; if you're short and stocky, don't wear horizontal stripes—you'll look 3 feet tall.

7. Don't worry if you're a little chunky; just wear what looks good on a guy with a little heft. You can't go wrong with black. It's slimming, classy and makes you reek of confidence.

8. Put away the tank top—even at the gym. You're not 12 years old anymore, and no one wants to smell your armpits.

9. If your woman's not happy, you're not happy. After getting ready to go out, if you see concern on her face when she looks you over, change your clothes. There's a 98.9 percent chance she's right.

10. Man breasts are your kryptonite, and you have to fight back. They're an immediate turnoff to women, even though most don't mind a plump guy. Attack the problem head-on: Go to the gym, and wear clothes that don't cling to your body.

11. If you wear glasses, remember they're a window into who you are. Update them at least every other year and consider style when choosing them. And don't skimp. Expensive glasses are infinitely better than those $50 specs on special at the local mall.

12. Drop the baseball hat. Yes, it was standard issue in college, but those days are gone. The only exceptions to this rule: Working in the yard, casually hanging out, or playing drums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

13. If you wear cologne, tone it down. You get points for wanting to smell good, but those points are immediately taken away when your co-workers can smell you in the break room—10 minutes after you left! Just spray a small amount into the air and walk through it. Less is more.

14. If you have a hairy chest, you cannot wear a V-neck without an undershirt. This is not 1977 and your name isn't Smokey. Or Simon Cowell, for that matter.

15. No socks with sandals. And if you do wear open-toed sandals, keep your feet groomed. Have you even looked down there since last summer?

16. Ohhhhhh ... so important. If you follow none of the above tips, please follow this one. Well groomed hands and nails are critical. Women are attracted to guys with clean nails. Keep your nails trimmed, cuticles pushed back and hands moisturized. Trust me on this one!!

Attention All Manly Men .... Simple Steps To Easy Skincare

Gone are the days of men laughing off skincare as too girly or pointless. Now guys want healthy skin, too. In recent years, new skincare lines exclusively catering to male consumers have launched, while traditional beauty houses have also created formulas. With so many options for skincare, how do you know exactly what to choose?

Well, good news for the average guy who wants to take care of his skin, but is overwhelmed with the products on today’s shelves: Skincare can be simple! Follow these steps for an easy, effective approach to getting a clean complexion.

Ditch the bar soap!!!!!!!!!!!! Many men mistakenly think that using ordinary bar soap in the shower is sufficient for cleansing the face. However, soap can actually do more harm than good by stripping your face of its natural oils. Instead, use a facial cleanser to dissolve daily dirt and grime for clear, healthy skin.

To save on time, apply your cleanser in the shower while your skin is already wet. Simply massage a small amount of product over the face and neck, rinse carefully and pat dry. After you get out of the shower, apply lotion immediately to lock in the moisture.

Scrub it off. You should exfoliate your face regularly two to three times a week to get rid of dead skin cells. Exfoliating encourages new cell growth, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and makes shaving easier.

With dozens of different formulations and products, today’s exfoliators are sophisticated yet simple concoctions featuring vitamins, minerals, herbs and plant extracts, all designed to soften and smooth without damaging the top layer of skin.

Improve your tone. If you’re like most guys, you don’t want any grease, film, dirt or soap left over on your face after cleansing. This is where your toner comes in. Pour some on a cotton ball or cotton round; then apply it to skin with gentle strokes. A toner will bring out your skin's natural shine :)

Smooth moves. Although men’s skin is thicker and tends to be coarser than a woman’s, moisturizing is still an important part of your basic routine. Fact is, environmental damage, free radicals and pollution don’t discriminate — every gender and skin type is an easy target. Give your skin the ability to fight back.

Also, try an anti-aging moisturizer with high levels of wrinkle-fighting and skin-smoothing ingredients. If your skin is oily, look for a moisturizer that’s oil-free.

Take cover. Add sunblock to your year-round routine to ward off environmental damage and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. In the morning, you can substitute sunblock for your moisturizer.

Although men have the advantage of being less prone to wrinkles than women, many guys neglect to apply sunscreen daily. This increases your risk for sunburn and skin cancer. So, make sunscreen part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth, reading the sports page and checking your e-mail.

Know thyself. Before you purchase any products, it’s important you understand your skin. Is your skin type dry, oily or a combination of the two? If you’re unsure, consult a dermatologist or skincare professional. Better yet, seek advice from your wife or girlfriend.

The shopping list

So what skincare items do you need? Check the list:

Cleanser. For a simple, multi-purpose product, try a cleanser and toner in one. Need a daily cleanser without the frilly scents? Not a problem; there are many unisex products that work miracles. Not into sharing? That's ok too; many product lines feature men's products that clean and moisturizer with a natural, masculine scent.

Exfoliator. For powerful exfoliation, try a product formulated with fine micro-exfoliators to lift dry, dull skin, leaving the face smooth. For sensitive skin, try a milder scrub. Look for a product that features jojoba beads, which scrubs gently and dissolves dry, rough skin and can be used on the body also.

Toner. Looking for a deep clean without dryness or burning? Seek for a botanical formula that soothes and moisturizes your skin while removing traces of impurities. For oily or acne-prone skin, opt for a product designed for your particular skin tyle.

Sunscreen. Choose a formula that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, and is suitable for any skin type.

Moisturizer. Oily skin will benefit from a moisturizer that’s oil-free, featuring ingredients like salicylic acid, witch hazel or retinol. In addition, numerous products not only keep your skin hydrated and healthy, but minimize the signs of aging as well.

For dry skin, use formulations that include vitamin C, shea butter or olive oil.

10 Accessories No Guy Should Be Without

You don't have to be an editor at GQ Magazine to know that style matters. Placing basic wardrobe challenges aside for the moment, let's take a look at some of the smaller details that make a big difference.

Here, in no particular order, are 10 things every man should own.

1. Silk tie: These days even traditional white-collar jobs have more relaxed dress codes, but when the situation calls for a tie you want it to count. Knit ties have their place, and that place is the back of your closet. A top quality silk tie in a solid color is your best bet for elegance and versatility, although geometric and foulard patterns work well, too. Experiment with different knots. Dress shirt collar shapes and size vary and a four-in-hand might look fine with one while another might look sharper with a Pratt knot.

2. Dress watch: Sure, when you want to know the time, you probably check your cell phone. But a watch is more than a timepiece: It's a statement of your personal style. Digital sport watches are fine, but they look out of place when you're decked out for a night on the town. Conversely, a dress watch always looks good whether you're wearing it to a black tie affair or out for a round of golf. You don't have to spring for a Rolex or a TAG Heuer, but find yourself something with a little class.

3. Cufflinks: While it's true that 99 percent of your shirts don't need them, every guy should own at least one pair for those times when only French cuffs will do. Avoid the novelty kind (dice, cocktail glasses, etc.) and forget about rhinestones and gems. Think Monte Carlo, not Vegas.

4. Belt: Make sure you own two–one each in black and brown leather. (Your belt should always match the color of your shoes.) Make sure it's about an inch wide. Narrower belts provide less definition at the waist. Wider ones make you look like a gunslinger.

5. Sunglasses: A pair of polarized drugstore sunglasses are fine for tucking above your sun visor in the car, but when you're out in the crowd you'll look less like Fearless Fly in a good pair of designer shades. Look for ones that offer both UV-A and UV-B protection and choose the style of frames that best fits your face (the cheaper kinds are pretty much one-size-fits-all).

6. A decent bathrobe: Most of us seldom bother with a robe at home since we're usually either dressed or not, but when you're visiting family or friends, or hosting same, you should have something to slip on between bedroom and bath that won't scare the kids. Terrycloth tends to get ratty faster. Velour, silk and kimono styles try too hard to be Hef. A knee-length cotton or flannel is your best bet.

7. Leather wallet: Wallets are one of those things we should replace more often than we do. If yours is starting to look like road kill, it's probably time for an upgrade. Top grain leather looks best and usually lasts longer. Never overload it. A fat wallet in your back pocket looks like a tumor. You also could opt for a slimmer credit card holder for your driver's license, ATM and main cards and just use a money clip for your cash.

8. Valet tray: At the end of the day, you empty your pockets and dump all that stuff on the top of your dresser. At the end of the month, the top of your dresser looks like a cross between a coin collection, a desk drawer and a pawn shop. No wonder you can never find your car keys. The solution? Get yourself a dresser-top valet box or tray.

9. Scarf: This is an essential seasonal accessory. It not only will keep wintry blasts from finding their way down through your collar, but it also dresses up your topcoat. Save the fleece for the ski slopes. You'll want to find something soft and stylish in cashmere or merino wool.

10. Leather travel kit: The Transportation Security Administration may require us to flash our liquid, aerosol and gel stash in a zip-lock bag, but that doesn't mean you can't use a more elegant solution for the rest of your toiletry gear. These kits come in everything from nylon to canvas, which is fine for the kids, but for us more genteel hombres, leather is the only choice.

Below are a few classic wardrobe pieces that every guy should have in his possession.  Perfect for every occasion, they will ensure you are always looking your best.

1) A Charcoal Grey Suit - This is a staple in a gentleman’s wardrobe, and a must-have for every professional.  A charcoal grey, almost black suit is adaptable to almost every imaginable situation.  Job interviews, funerals, weddings, and cocktail parties.  The charcoal suit can be worn to all of these.  And since it is not black or a lighter color, it is almost indiscernible that you are re-wearing the same piece.  A good quality charcoal suite is definitely worth every penny of the investment.

2) A Trench Coat - Burberry has brought the trench coat back into the mainstream for men, although it should have never left.  A trench coat is a wonderful adornment for a chilly fall day or rainy day.  They come in multiple lengths: short, mid length (bellow the buttock), and calf length.  I would recommend the mid length.  And if you want a distinguishing look, do not use the belt of the jacket as it was intended.  Rather, double it over as if you were tying it.  That will give it a great casual look perfect for any day of the week.

3) A White, Long Sleeved Oxford - The oxford cloth shirt is a great accessory to any suit.  It was be worn with or without a tie and comes in a variety of styles.  A white oxford shirt is great in that you can purchase the most inexpensive available, iron and starch it, and it looks like a million bucks.  This does not have to be a huge investment piece.

MENS BEN SHERMAN WHITE OXFORD SHIRT

4) A Striped, Long Sleeved Button up Shirt - The reason every guy must have this is because he needs a back-up, secondary long sleeved button up.  This shirt can go casual or dressy.  Again, it can be paired with the charcoal suit and can be work with or without a tie.  The fabric of this shirt is of lighter weight and does not need to be starched, only ironed.  It can also be paired with khakis or your favorite jeans and be worn to a Sunday Brunch or a night on the town.

5) A Short Sleeved Button up Shirt - A short sleeved button up shirt is necessary for its uber casualness.  There are many times when a long sleeved shirt seems like too much, yet a tee shirt simply won’t due.  This is when you wear the short sleeved button up.  Please, please, please do not try to wear this under your suit coat and pretend that it is long sleeved.  No one can pull that off.  Everyone will wonder what happened to your cuffs.

6) Aviator sunglasses - There is something about aviator sunglasses that makes a man feel like a man.  They have been around for quite a while, but made popular in the 80’s because of the movie Top Gun.  Now they grace the runway of every designer known to man.  The reason every guy should own a pair of aviator sunglasses is that they look great on everyone.  Shapes and sized will vary slightly between brands, but I guarantee that you will be able to find a pair that suits your face and makes you feel masculine.

7) Black Dress Shoes - Another unequivocal staple of the gentleman’s wardrobe is the black dress shoe.  They come in a myriad of designs, so take your pick.  For a dressier look, select a polished loafer with tassels or a lace up variety.  For a more casual look, choose a slip on in a relaxed leather or a lace up with a less pointy toe.  Either way you go you cannot go wrong with a black shoe.  As a rule of thumb I would warn against distressed leather black shoes.  This is not an alternative to the above mentioned for a “classic” wardrobe.  If you already have a pair of black shoes that fit the classic description, feel free to indulge yourself with the distressed look.

8) Great Fitting Blue Jeans - I don’t know a man who does not have at least one pair of blue jeans in his closet. Be sure that the jeans are without holes or tears.  To assess the length, stand wearing your black shoes, feet together, back straight.  The jeans should break at the top of the shoes.  That means that it not only touches the top of the shoes but goes a bit further.  If the jeans are longer than needed, but fit great in the waist, take them to a tailor and have them hemmed.  A good tailor can hem a pair of jeans for only $10.

9) A Pima Cotton V-Neck Tee Shirt - Every once in a while an occasion requires one to wear a tee shirt, other than lying around watching television.  When this occasion does come along the v-neck pima cotton tee shirt will come in handy.  However, do not confuse this piece of your wardrobe with your smelly, stained undershirts that you wear under dress shirts.  Those shirts are stained and smelly for a reason.  And this one will soon follow suit if treated the same way.  Be sure to preserve this shirt for occasions calling for something more casual than the short sleeved button up so it is always fresh and ready to go.  Seriously - do not wear it to the gym.

10) Flat-front Khaki Pants - Last bust not least, the flat-front khaki pant. “Khakis” as they are so often called, are the mainstay of male culture.  Who does not already have a great pair of Gap or Banana Republic khaki pants that have been worn to perfection?
